Garage doors do not last forever. And whether commercial garage doors or residential ones, you can be sure that over time, repairs will certainly be necessary. The following takes a look at some of the most common garage door problems and repairs that you may encounter:
Of all of the standard garage door problems, broken springs are certainly one of the most common. Broken springs occur over time in even the highest quality of doors, as metal fatigues with use. It’s a smart idea to check garage door springs at least once a year, and to replace springs that look rusted or misshapen (when the coils look twisted instead of straight)
Of course, if something breaks, get it repaired immediately.
Just like springs, cables on a garage door can break too. Broken and fraying cables are more than just a headache; they can be a serious danger, too. In fact, faulty cables can cause a door to fall too quickly when being lowered, and may result in the garage door slamming shut on a person or a vehicle without warning.
Panels in a garage door may not fully break over time – unless they are directly impacted, e.g. a car crashes into them – but they do usually wear down and crack. The good news is that depending upon the size of the break, the garage door style, and the material, it may be possible to repair or replace a single panel, rather than replacing the entire garage door.
Luckily, as common as a broken garage door open may be, it is also a fairly easy fix in the majority of cases. Most of the time, a garage door opener that is not working is correctly simply by replacing the batteries. In some cases, a garage that is not responding to a garage door opener may be a sign that something else is in need of replacement, such as the garage opener or sensors.
As a note, the above list is not inclusive; it is a great idea to perform a throughout assessment of your garage door and all moving parts at least once per year, if not more frequently.
