When to Get Home Window Repair or Replacement

Posted Residential Windows

It’s an inevitable fact of home ownership that your windows and/or glass doors will require repair or replacement at some point during your lifetime. Determining whether you only need home window repair or require a total replacement can be tricky. Additionally, many homeowners are wary of window and door companies that try to sell them all new installations when they might not need them.

If you’re unsure when you need broken window repair or replacement, here is a handy guide:

When to Get Home Window Repair

  • If you have very old windows: Some windows, especially those constructed for pre-World War I-era homes, are heavy-duty. Some even include custom woodwork or other decorative features that enhance older homes. In this case, replacement should only be done in cases where restorations will not work.
  • If you have had custom windows put in recently: Chances are you don’t want to replace an entire bay window or brand new casement windows. When it comes to something small that can be repaired, removing an entire window just doesn’t make sense.
  • If you just need the glass replaced: Cracked window repair is a fairly straightforward process. It can be completed by the homeowner, but for safety reasons, it’s often best to have an expert repair or replace glass panes. Some minor cracks in windows can simply be repaired rather than risking expensive replacements for certain types of glass (especially those with decorative details).

When to Get a Home Window Replacement

  • If you see any major damage along the casing, drip, or other parts of the window: Rotting and cracks around the window can lead to bigger problems later on. Typically, this can mean that the entire window has to come out, since pests, water, and drafts can get in through these broken areas. The same goes for the muntins (the strips that separate the panes of glass in a window); if they have cracks, then they can’t protect you from the elements.
  • If the window doesn’t move or open: For safety reasons, you should make sure that your windows can open easily for proper ventilation or for escape during a fire or other emergency. If your windows don’t move the way they’re supposed to, it’s probably time for a replacement.
  • If your windows aren’t protecting you from drafts and moisture: Windows that have excess drafts or are letting a lot of water in most likely need replacement. The issue could be with the casing, or it could be a problem with the insulation, especially if the window is not double glazed.
  • If your windows have several or all of these problems: If your window panes are cracked, rotting, not well insulated or unable to be opened, then it’s time to replace your windows. Call your home window repair and replacement specialist as soon as possible to get these problems taken care of.

Sometimes, repairs and even replacements can be done on your own, but it’s typically best to consult an expert. Windows and doors prices can vary, so get an estimate beforehand on your residential window repairs or replacements. Contact a home window repair and installation specialist to determine your needs and make sure that the job gets done right.
